Composting, Recycling and Waste Reduction at BRSSD Schools
The Belmont Redwood Shores Sustainability Parent Group are avid proponents of reducing waste, reusing items, composting, and reycling. We educate others on how to reduce the amount of waste going to our landfills by:
- Provide support to schools by collecting and sorting waste at mealtimes.
- Distribute fresh, excess food from the schools to local communities in need.
- Collect and ship multi-layer plastic/foil food and drink pouches to a third party vendor to be recycled.
- Collect plastic film to be recycled into decking materials.
- Lend reusable utensils and dishes for school functions, such as hot chocolate day, classroom parties, PTA meetings, etc.
- Purchase trash grabbers, reusable gloves, and reusable buckets for sorting and cleanup events.
- Provide educational, hands-on activities, presentations and assemblies to classrooms, schools, and community-based groups.
- Take tours of our local waste management facilities, such as the Material Transfer Facilty, to better understand where our local compost, recyclables and trash go.
